Don't pass non-existent C++ libraries to gcc.  If libstdcxx.a does not
exist, try libstdcx.a and libstd~1.a (and similarly for any library
whose name exceeds DOS 8+3 limits).  If gcc.exe is not on PATH, print
an error message to that effect.
